Conversion: I became converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1982. A faithful home teacher, Brother Robinson, came to my home to faithfully home teach my family and I. Brother Robinson ask me what it would take for me to be baptized. I told him it was time to do just that. I had developed a testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel by attending Sunday Sacrament meetings for many years. I had recently been contemplating becoming a member and Brother Robinson’s question was both timely and inspired. I was baptized later that month and had little knowledge, at that time, how much happiness the Gospel of Jesus Christ contained in the Book of Mormon could bring into my life. Through the efforts of great Bishops and other wonderful church leaders, I progressed in the gospel and now, nearly 33 years later, am serving a full time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Canada Winnipeg Mission in Thompson Manitoba Canada. We will complete our mission in December of this year and look forward to seeing our children and 14 grandchildren before returning to our home in Ketchikan Alaska.
My Testimony: I, James Douglas Burkman, know that Jesus Christ lives and loves each and every one of us. I know I can return to live with my Heavenly Father if I merely remain faithful and do all I can to further the work of redemption here upon the earth. I have covenanted with my Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ to uphold the standards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I renew those covenants every Sunday by reverently partaking of the Sacrament.
I love my wife, Patricia Fuller Burkman, and all of our family. I know I can be reunited with my wife and other loved ones in a joyous meeting in the heavens above through the ordinances of the Holy Temple. I hope and pray that all our family will remain faithful and walk the path of righteousness so we can join those who have gone on before us in a grand reunion in heaven. I know great happiness and joy can come from prayer and embracing the truth found in the Holy Scriptures contained in the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price, New Testament, and Old Testament. I know all these great books testify of the greatness and glory of God the Father and His son, Jesus Christ. I know all, regardless of their lot in life, through the atoning sacrifice of the Savior, and the grace of God, will live with Him again. I say these things humbly in Jesus name, Amen.
