Is Jesus Returning Now?

Q: Is Jesus Returning Now?

It’s difficult to give a straight-forward answer to this question, because “no one knows…not even the angels in heaven” when exactly Christ will return (Matthew 24:36). But the Bible gives us many signs to look forward to, signs that help us know when Christ’s return is near.

Short Answer

Not now, but soon.

Long Answer

When Jesus was at the Mount of Olives, his disciples asked him what the signs of his return would be. His answer is recorded in Matthew 24. We’ve already seen the fulfillment of some of these prophecies, especially in the current pandemic. But not every sign has been shown yet. That is to say, Christ probably isn’t coming tomorrow. Still, the current pandemic, natural disasters, and social upheaval we’re witnessing now marks the beginning of the end.

False Christs – “For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will lead many astray” (Matthew 24:5). This has already happened world-wide. Christ warned his disciples to “Be careful that no one leads you astray” (Matthew 24:4). It can be tempting at a time like this to accept people who offer answers. But not all answers are from God. We can know the truth by trusting in this counsel from the Bible: “You will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16). In other words, we can discern someone’s intentions by carefully evaluating the “fruits” or results of their actions.

Wars and Rumors of Wars – Another sign mentioned in the bible is war. “For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom” (Matthew 24:7). This is another sign that has already begun to be fulfilled. All around the world, nations are fighting within themselves and against each other. And there are also figurative wars, raging online and within our own homes. Jesus added to His disciples, “but the end is not yet” (Matthew 24:6). Even though these signs are troubling, they are only a precursor.

Famines and Plagues – Of course, this is one sign we’re all too familiar with right now. The current “plague” we face can be alarming, but it’s important to remember that Christ is still in control. We can look to Him for peace and comfort, no matter what happens around us.
