The Great Commandment

“Which is the greatest commandment in the law?”

Matthew 22

The Pharisees came back again to try to trick the Savior after they heard that the Sadducees had failed in their trap. The Pharisees had already failed many times, but tirelessly they brought their new barrage.

“Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?” they asked, confident that this time they would beat the Savior.

“Love the Lord thy God with all they heart, soul, and mind,” answered Jesus directly. “This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it, which is that you must love your neighbor as yourself. All of the commandments and the prophets are built upon these two commandments.”

Humbled, one Pharisee said, “Master, you have said the truth. There is one God, and none other than He. And to love him with all the heart, all understanding, all the soul, all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, that is more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

Jesus saw that this Pharisee was separated from the group.

“You are not far from the kingdom of God,” Jesus said to him.

No one dared to ask Him any questions after that.
