Mary, Mother of Jesus

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

When Mormons celebrate Mother’s Day, they often take some time to honor one of history’s most important mothers as well. Mary, the mother of Jesus had a very difficult role in life and one that affected eternity through her faith. Mormons believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and of Mary. Despite prevailing gossip, they do not believe this occurred through intimacy because both the Bible and the Book of Mormon say Mary was a virgin when Jesus was born. They also do not believe the Holy Ghost is Jesus’ father, since the Bible specifically says the Lord’s Father is God. Although Mormons do not know how the conception occurred, it is not important since it does not impact eternal life. They know only that it was done respectfully. Mormons believe Jesus Christ’s duel heritage—both mortal and divine—are essential to His eternal mission as the Savior. Because of His mortality, He was able to experience those things mortals experienced, but... Read the rest of this entry »

Finding Happiness through the Lord Jesus Christ

Monday, May 14th, 2012

Written by Ashley Bell, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also known as a “Mormon”). Ashley and her husband are expecting parents, for the first time, and are very excited for the life that is ahead. Finding Happiness Is a Constant Journey, Not a Destination or Graduation Thanks be to my parents who both found happiness even though they came from backgrounds that did not cultivate the feeling, for various reasons. My dad came from a Greek family who wanted him to have a Greek wife. My mom came from a Mormon family that ideally would have had her marry someone with a similar belief system (even though they weren’t active Mormons at the time). Despite their parents opposition they were married because they felt right about it. For their financial income they ran and owned a local bar. They didn’t feel happy there so they gave up their good income and moved to where they thought they might find happiness-... Read the rest of this entry »

Jesus Christ as Advocate

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Prophets Help Lead Us to Jesus Christ Daniel, a student at Brigham Young University and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (sometimes called “Mormon Church” by friends of other faiths), shares his insight to his scripture study of Moses 7:1-40. The book of Moses is found in The Pearl of Great Price, a book of scripture revered as sacred by Latter-day Saints. The book of Moses is an extract from the translation of the Bible as revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith. Moses 7:1-40 provides a narrative of Enoch’s interaction with God the Father as he is shown a vision of future events and a glimpse into the heart of our Father. From this narrative, I learned multiple things, asked several questions, considered the flow of the account, and came to understand better the role of Jesus Christ as Justifier and Advocate. The scriptures are filled with numerous accounts of prophets in various dispensations being shown in vision events... Read the rest of this entry »

What Think Ye of Christ?

Friday, April 13th, 2012

By Jan Mayer, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints .  As a “Mormon woman,” Jan is a graduate of BYU and mother of five children. She has written for numerous publications,  including The Denver Post, The Villager and NorthStar. I worked in a small office area with a woman who had great disdain for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (nicknamed “Mormons”). We had been briefly acquainted before she recommended me for a job. Although she knew I was a Mormon, she thought I had been deceived and that she could change my beliefs. When she learned that I was a devout Latter-day Saint (Mormon)—truly converted–she was appalled. When I asked where her information had come from, she told me she had taken classes at her church. Shocked, I told her that I couldn’t understand why one religion would teach against another—that it didn’t seem very Christ-like. She told me that the world... Read the rest of this entry »

Latter-day Saints (Mormons) Share Witness of Resurrection in Social Media

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are sharing their witness of the Savior, their love for Him, their knowledge of His atonement, crucifixion and resurrection online this Easter weekend in an unprecedented social media wave. Witnesses are posted on mormon.org, a site created to share Mormon beliefs with friends of all faiths. We invite you to take a look and to share and extend the witnesses you see and read with those you love and those in your broadest networks, that the Savior may be honored and glorified and remembered in a special way this season and all seasons. The Internet initiative, sponsored by the Church’s Mormon.org website, will run Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 6-8 April 2012. Comments from the Church’s Missionary Department explained that this will be a unique chance for Mormons to share their personal testimony of Jesus Christ with people of other faiths. Read more about the campaign at LDS.org. My own witness... Read the rest of this entry »

Jesus Christ, Lamb of God

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Easter is coming in just a few days. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (a Mormon), Easter means much more to me than spring flowers and chocolate bunnies. I am a Christian, with a deep and abiding love for Jesus Christ. As always at this time of year, I feel both profound sorrow and profound joy as I contemplate the sacrifice of our Savior when He took upon Himself all the sins and evil of the world, suffered, and was crucified. It is almost unbearable to remember His sufferings. Yet my heart is filled with overwhelming joy at His resurrection, which brings with it the incredible promise of eternal life. The Doctrine and Covenants, which contains revelations from God given through modern Mormon prophets, uses a beautiful image to describe Jesus’ atonement.  Jesus has “descended below all things, …that he might be in all and through all things, the light of truth” (from The Doctrine and Covenants,... Read the rest of this entry »

The Twelve Apostles Speak Today

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

This weekend, the Twelve Apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ will be speaking to the world during the worldwide General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Members of the Church, who are also known as Mormons, will gather in meetinghouses and homes to watch and listen via TV, radio, satellite, and internet. The broadcast originates in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the Church has its headquarters. It is a unique opportunity to learn from the living representatives of Jesus Christ on the earth today. Jesus Called Twelve Apostles to be Special Witnesses During His mortal ministry, Jesus called twelve apostles to bear witness of Him to the people. He chose, from among His disciples, Twelve to whom he gave special priesthood authority: And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease (Matthew 10:1). Jesus... Read the rest of this entry »

Why Doesn’t God always Stop Evil?

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

Melissa DeMoux is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (“Mormon” woman) and resides in West Vally City, Utah. Many people in the world question the existence of a God, due to their experiences with terrible acts and events which they cannot understand a loving creator permitting to happen. Such evil, however, is a necessary part of our mortality, and with a little study we can come to better understand it. While turning to the Bible is helpful, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (sometimes mistakenly called the Mormon Church) has other books of scripture, the Book of Mormon, which contains revelations that make the purpose of the existence of evil more clear. For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so . . . righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound... Read the rest of this entry »

Brightly Beams Our Father’s Mercy: Jesus Christ and the Prodigal Son

Monday, March 12th, 2012

by Nora Moore Hess The Men of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir have made a truly exceptional recording of the following Mormon hymn. I heard it yesterday on their broadcast, and then I listened to it on iTunes again and again:   Brightly Beams Our Father’s Mercy Brightly beams our Father’s mercy From His lighthouse evermore, But to us He gives the keeping Of the lights along the shore. Let the lower lights be burning; Send a gleam across the wave. Some poor fainting, struggling seaman You may rescue, you may save. (“Brightly Beams Our Father’s Mercy,” Hymns #335) Someone I love very dearly is back in jail again. He gets into trouble, usually small things, and then just waits for it to go away. He always seems genuinely surprised when it doesn’t. When I heard he had been arrested again, I felt my usual combination of sadness and relief. Jail is not always such a bad place. He has a place to sleep and three meals... Read the rest of this entry »

Blessings from God the Father

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

Written by Brittany Spencer, a BYU student, studying a volume of scripture known as the Pearl of Great Price, which is written by prophets; members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints “Mormons” revere it as sacred text. This post comes from a book within the Pearl of Great Price known as The Book of Moses; it is an extraction from the translation of the Bible as revealed to Joseph Smith the Prophet, June 1830—February 1831. We Are All Blessed by Being Children of God the Father In a book of scripture, held sacred by Latter-day Saints “Mormons”, known as the Pearl of Great Price, we learn in Moses chapter one, that a vision Moses had begins after he has been caught up to a mountain. The phrase caught up seems to imply that Moses did not reach God’s presence entirely of his own accord. In addition, Moses could only endure God’s presence because “the glory of the Lord was upon [him]” (See Moses 1:31). These versus seem to... Read the rest of this entry »
