I would like to share my little story about why I choose to follow our Heavenly Father’s teaching in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (sometimes called the “Mormon Church”). I am grateful that Heavenly Father has blessed me and given me a great husband. He led me to the Mormon missionaries and the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Gospel has been planted into my heart and influences my life every day.
When I was an investigator of the LDS Church, it was difficult for me to learn and understand the church teachings,. I was Chinese educated and knew nothing of Jesus Christ or the Bible. Everything in this church was new to me. I remember when I met the Mormon missionaries; they told me that through Heavenly Father’s plan, family can be eternal. I was curious and wanted to know more. Then they brought me a Chinese version of “The Family, Proclamation to the World”. I read it, and it really comforts my heart so deeply.
How important are families? Why did Heavenly Father send us to earth as members of families? The First Presidency, and the council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children. Heavenly Father has revealed that one of the purposes of marriage is to provide mortal bodies for His spirit children.
President David O. Mckay said; “with all my heart I believe that the best place to prepare for eternal life is in the home.” Parents have a sacred duty to rear our children in love and righteousness, “to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one other, to observe the commandments of God. Husband and wives should be thoughtful and kind to other. Children should likewise show their love for their parents” (Proclamation).
What are we doing to help strengthen our family and make it successful? President Harold B. Lee taught, “The most important of the Lord’s work you will ever do will be within the walls of your own homes.
Satan knows how important families are to our Heavenly Father’s plan. He always seeks to destroy them by keeping us from drawing near to the Lord. He will tempt us to do things that will draw our families apart.”
We can strengthen our families by having family prayer every night and morning; praying together as husband and wife; teaching children the gospel every week in family home evening; studying the scriptures regularly as a family; and doing things together as a family, such as work projects, outings, and decision making. We can learn to be kind, patient, long-suffering and charitable. We can attend church meetings regularly. We should follow the counsel of the Lord in Doctrine and Covenants 88:119: “Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God.” We can keep a family history, perform temple work together, and receive the sealing ordinances of the temple.
The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostle declared, “Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities.”
Families can be together forever. To enjoy this blessing we must be married in the temple. As quoted in D&C 132:18, when people are married outside the temple, the marriage ends when one of the partners dies. When we are married in the temple by the authority of the Melchizedek Priesthood, we are married for time and eternity. If we keep our covenants with the Lord, our families will be united eternally as husband, wife, and children. Death cannot separate us.
I love my family; I want to be with them forever. And I believe through Heavenly Father’s plan, our families can be eternal.
